Event Details

Crossrail is building a new railway for London and the South East, running from Reading and Heathrow in the west, through 42km of new tunnels under London to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. The project is building 10 new stations and upgrading many more, while integrating new and existing infrastructure.

2018 is a historic year for Crossrail. The programme to deliver the new Elizabeth line is now over 90 per cent complete. It will open through central London in December this year, redefining travel in London.

2018 has also been marked as the Year of Engineering, a nation-wide campaign which celebrates the world of engineering and looks to inspire the next generation. The campaign aims to tackle the engineering skills gap and widen the pool of young people who join the profession to help deliver the next wave of infrastructure projects.

The new railway, which will be known as the Elizabeth line when services begin through central London in December, will be fully integrated with London’s existing transport network and will be operated by Transport for London. New state-of-the-art trains will carry an estimated 200 million passengers per year. The new service will speed up journey times, increase central London’s rail capacity by 10% and bring an extra 1.5 million people to within 45 minutes of central London.

Custom House Elizabeth line station

Integrated with the existing DLR station with homes to the north and ExCeL London to the south, the new station makes the most of the limited space it has available. Designed to create a welcoming civic presence for local people and regional and international visitors, the station plan is a simple, straightforward journey from the entrance to platforms.

Open Day Event

As part of the Year of Engineering campaign, Crossrail is opening its doors to its new central station sites from Paddington to Woolwich this year. These events will give visitors a last chance to get behind the hoardings, see the future Elizabeth line stations under construction and experience this major infrastructure project at work.

The Custom House construction site will be opened to the public on Friday 23 March 2018. It will be a free, self-guided, timed tour of the ticket hall and platform of the future Elizabeth line station. Staff from across the project will be present to answer any questions.

This is an exclusive opportunity to see behind the Crossrail construction hoardings.  Visits such as this are in high demand, and to ensure we are fair to all wishing to attend, you will only be permitted into site on the time of your ticket.
