Sessions led by Jen Curran, Lead Associate, Wren & Greyhound

Sustainable leadership, like organisational sustainability, is challenging and complex. It requires organisations and their leaders to respond to the adaptive and technical challenges of complex and evolving environments.

These workshops explore the principles and practices of sustainable leadership. Each masterclass is designed to standalone but when taken collectively will add up to a coherent programme as whole. Attending the whole programme will help organisational leaders develop a holistic approach to sustainable leadership in their organisations.

Throughout the workshops, participants will work on their own sustainable leadership challenges, with peer and facilitator support. Using the new Lasting Leadership Guide, delegates will be equipped to develop robust sustainable leadership plans for their organisation.

Delegates will gain:

  • Better understanding of sustainable leadership and how to address it.
  • Improved ability to plan for and take action on sustainable leadership.
  • Access to practical approaches and helpful tools for developing sustainable leadership capacity in their organisation.
  • Opportunities to develop sustainable leadership plans and approaches, including succession plans, building leadership capacity across organisations, attracting the next generation of leaders and supporting leadership equality and diversity.

Masterclasses

Masterclass 1: Understanding Sustainable Leadership

Thursday 14 May, 10:00 – 14:00

There is no organisational sustainability without sustainable leadership. This session will provide an introduction to the main paradoxes, principles and practices of sustainable leadership. After participating delegates will be able to identify, frame and take action on their sustainable leadership challenges.

Masterclass 2: Succession Planning

Tuesday 16 June, 10:00 – 14:00

Succession planning is a journey not a destination, and it is best done when it’s not needed. This session will support participants to develop contingency planning, involvement and knowledge management processes to support proactive and holistic succession planning. This will ensure their organisation is in good shape for planned or unplanned succession, increasing the chances of post-succession survival.

Masterclass 3: Lateral Leadership

Thursday 24 September, 10:00 – 14:00

Leaders exist in every corner of your organisation, waiting for the opportunity and permission to emerge. Lateral leadership involves people taking ownership, autonomy, and accountability regardless of their role or place in the hierarchy. This session explores ideas and approaches to developing leadership across your organisation. It will support participants to adapt to the new world of distributed leadership and identify ways to delegate, empower and involve people at every level more effectively.

Masterclass 4: Attracting the Next Generation of Leaders and Supporting Leadership Equality and Diversity

Tuesday 13 October, 10:00 – 14:00

Making the sector attractive to emerging leaders and proactively encouraging leadership equality and diversity is key to future sustainability. Emerging leaders want to step up, but creating more opportunities for entry, development and progression will make our organisations more attractive. This session will explore the vital nature of self-care and development to leadership sustainability and how it is essential to develop a culture of openness and inclusion to enable everyone to access leadership opportunities.

About the facilitator:

Jen Curran has 20+ years’ experience in the non-profit sector. She is Lead Associate and board member at Wren & Greyhound and authored the newly produced Lasting Leadership Guide. Jen has first-hand experience of many of the issues explored in the masterclass programme from her previous roles as Deputy and then interim CEO at a national charity.
