LATE NIGHT LIBRARY CLUB PRESENTS…

Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson
7PM - 1.30AM

Welcome to your club, book lovers. From the team behind the respectfully raucous The Amy Grimehouse events, Late Night Library Club have their pens poised to inject a bit of ‘literati’ into the East London ‘glitterati’ club scene.

The fourth edition of Late Night Library Club celebrates Orange Are Not The Only Fruit.
Part of our Queer Stories in Britain series, to mark the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of male homosexuality (The Sexual Offences Act).

Welcome to your club, book lovers. From the team behind the respectfully raucous The Amy Grimehouse events, Late Night Library Club have their pens poised to inject a bit of ‘literati’ into the East London ‘glitterati’ club scene.

Put on your most uncomfortable shoes, prepare to repent your sins and get ready for Judgment Day as London’s interactive literary evening out, Late Night Library Club, presents an evening of events and discussion around Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit.

The main event follows at 7.30pm. On arrival, you’ll receive, 'The Plain Truth', an instructional pamphlet that will help you learn whether you’re destined for heaven or hell come the Day of Judgment… good luck with that. Then enter an immersive world of religious do-gooders, pious hypocrites, confirmed bachelorettes and preachers with naughty secrets.

The flock is welcomed to explore the many corners of Sutton House (no airing cupboard, though – ‘you don’t need an airing cupboard when you’ve got Jesus’). There you will be able to participate in all manner of entertainments that just might be agencies of Satan sent to tempt us to the dark side. These include Bible fuzzy felt; weaving your own religious sampler in our Tanglewreck class; a photobooth where you are invited to practice your best Second Coming face; or just join us in praying for people in hot countries.

A panel of experts will discuss Oranges’s themes of religious upbringing, deviant sexuality and, of course, forbidden fruit. Is it an autobiographical novel? ‘No not at all’, Winterson insists, ‘and yes of course.’ Panelists include novelist Julia Bell, lecturer Rebecca Pohl of the University of Manchester and more.

Performance will follow with Lisa Gornick presenting a live drawing show illustrating and narrating an imagined, intimate, interaction…. And then prepare to be saved evangelical about the multi-gender-Messiah-reincarnation that is Shesus and the Sistas. Music will come from the Jim Reeves Devotional Selection.

**The evening kicks off with an optional hour-long walking tour around and about the event venue Sutton House, a National Trust Tudor landmark, curated by Queer Tours of London and starting at 5.30pm. They will draw out Hackney’s queer stories amongst the many cracks and noonies.

Dress-up is highly encouraged, so get suited and booted for the hottest (library) ticket in town - Late Night Library Club.
