Event description

Description

Raby Castle is surprisingly dark. It's certainly dark enough to see the Milky Way. It's a very special night photography location, partly because of the Castle, and partly because of the lakes. Let me explain . . .

Something I treasure as a landscape astrophotographer is the chance to capture reflections of the night sky. If you've tried to find locations where you can do this, you'll have noticed they tend to be exposed and windy, and it therefore becomes difficult to see the stars in the surface of the water.

Raby Castle is different, because of the sheltered location. I've done six night shoots there now, and on five of those occasions, the water was absolutely still. On the other occasion, it had slight ripples. No guarantees of course, but I've never seen anywhere like it, in that respect.

In 2019, the dark moonless nights return in late August. The core of the Milky Way is at its best, and visible at the start of the night (total darkness, after Astronomical Twilight).

At this event, we'll have private access to the Raby Castle grounds for 1.5 hours at peak Milky Way time/season, including free parking.

These events are suitable for all experience levels, from beginners to experienced photographers. We'll progress at your own pace, and I'll work with you individually to set you some achievable goals, given your current ability.

You'll need a tripod, a torch, and a camera (a DSLR or mirrorless) which can have the shutter speed, aperture, focus and ISO set manually. Wide landscape lenses get the best results, especially those with an aperture of f/2.8 or wider. However, it's possible with an 18-55 kit lens . . . just fiddly!

Some bridge cameras may be suitable, but you'll need to be sure you can use a slower shutter speed than 8 seconds, and that you can focus manually. Smartphones are challenging, so if that's your plan, talk it through with me first. If you'd like advice on any other equipment, please message or email me.

Numbers are restricted to 15 photographers. Please note that in order to keep prices down, bookings are non-refundable if you're unable to come (but it may possible to transfer it to someone else, upon request).

In terms of weather, if the BBC forecast is predicting heavy rain, with a 50% chance or greater - or winds over 30mph (although it's quite sheltered at Raby), you'll be given the chance to move your booking to another workshop, or will be offered a voucher for a different event. I'll make this decision two days before.

The good news is that in August, the conditions are usually good. However, by booking for the workshop, you're confirming you understand there's always a chance of partial or total cloud cover, in which case we'll get shots when we can, and will do some lightpainting and different illumination at other times.

Joining instructions will be sent to everyone around two days before the event.

Book early to secure your place.
