Description

Latin at Manchester: past, present and future

An evening symposium to celebrate William Hulme and the Hulme Chair of Latin

Please join us for 'Latin at Manchester: past, present and future', a celebration of William Hulme and the Hulme Chair of Latin at the University of Manchester, to mark the award of the title of Hulme Professor of Latin to David Langslow.

The event will held at 5.00pm to 6.30pm on 23 January 2019 and will be followed by a drinks reception. The talk is free but please do book tickets as spaces are limited. We are particularly keen for school students to come (the talks will be accessible to all).

William Hulme (c. 1631-1691) was a Lancashire lawyer and landowner, and the founder of an educational charitable trust. Major benefactions of the trust went to Brasenose College Oxford (where Hulme studied), to grammar schools in and around Manchester, and to Owens College and later the University of Manchester. The Hulme professorships of Greek and of Latin in the University were intended to support the preparation of those aspiring to the priesthood in their study of the New Testament in Greek and in their ability to deliver sermons in good Latin.

The title Hulme Professor of Latin was last held by H. D. Jocelyn (1933-2000), a leading authority on especially preclassical Latin. It was revived in 2018 and given to David Langslow, in his twentieth year as Professor of Classics, as he prepared for the second time at Manchester to be the first head of a new Dept.

This short symposium will celebrate the life and works of William Hulme, consider the changing complexion of Latin studies since Jocelyn's day, in Manchester and further afield, and give the new Hulme Professor a short break from admin to reflect on his favourite subject.
