It’s commonly said that the ocean is blue, but that's not entirely true.
An Index of the Colour of Water brings together daily photographs of the sea by Christina Riley and descriptions of the colour of water found in books within The Nature Library catalogue, all from writers who have noticed acutely that, as well as being blue, water is also crystalline turquoise, or amethyst, or copper, or so clear as to be colourless.
The book has been handmade in a limited edition of 30 handmade pamphlets, one for each day in April, each with a unique cover and a small print of that day’s sea inside.
Join The Nature Library on June 15 when its founder Christina Riley will talk about the project, share extracts from some of the books which feature in it, and, weather allowing, lead a walk to Irvine beach to see, photograph and write about the colour of water.
The Nature Library will be open for public browsing and borrowing from 10am - 4pm.
