Please join us to launch ‘Remembering 1807’, a new digital archive of commemorative activity relating to the transatlantic slave trade and its abolition.

In 2007 there was a proliferation of events and initiatives around the UK to mark the bicentenary of the Slave Trade Abolition Act (1807). Remembering 1807 maps projects, materials and resources from over 300 of these initiatives, from large national projects and regional initiatives to local history projects and community-led events. Records and resources produced by these projects help us to understand the place of slavery, the slave trade and its abolition in the UK's public history and commemorative traditions.

The launch event will include reflections on activities in 2007 by Professor Catherine Hall, introductions and demonstrations of the archive by the project team, and an opportunity to view the ‘London, Sugar and Slavery’ gallery at the Museum of London Docklands (first opened in 2007).

This is a free event with wine and refreshments served from 6.30 pm.

Remembering 1807 is a resource of ‘Antislavery Usable Past’, involving the Wilberforce Institute (University of Hull) and the University of Nottingham, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
