Event description

Description

We are delighted to welcome you to the launch of a brand new research centre at the University of Northampton. The centre is a joint initiaitive between the Faculty of Health and Society and The Institute for Public Safety, Crime and Justice.

There will be talks from John Hageman (Interpol), Dr. Helen Poole (University of Northampton), Professor Peter Squires (University of Brighton).

The threat of gun related crime, whether in the commission of individual offences, trafficking, or as a means of committing terrorist offences, is a global threat which requires global cooperation in response. Global differences in firearms culture, legislation (and gaps in legislation), and developing technologies, and the performance of different gun control regimes across Europe, including the variable intelligence picture available in different countries, have the potential to frustrate attempts to arrive at global responses to the international control of firearms.

The Centre aims to respond to these threats by conducting research, consultancy and related activities that proactively address emerging issues and respond to the needs of policymakers and law enforcement agencies working in related fields internationally. It will adopt a model that seeks to address issues in a way that is designed to have the greatest positive social, economic and human impact, by working in cooperation with stakeholders in the field to reduce harm. Underpinned by a focus on positive social impact, the Centre will establish and utilise a network of international experts in the field, with the experience, skills and expertise required to respond to this agenda.

The Research Centre aims to:

  • bring together a global network of experts (practitioners, academics and policymakers), in order to develop research questions, projects and evaluations, which provide findings and recommendations that address contemporary challenges in harm reduction related to firearms;

  • increase international cooperation in tackling the threat of firearms related crime, trafficking and terrorism;

  • increase knowledge and understanding of the challenges of firearms related crime and terrorism through the UN Doha Declaration to Promote a Culture of Lawfulness through primary, secondary and tertiary education systems.
