Launch of European Red List of Bees: The status of European bees and their critical role in pollination

The IUCN European Red List of Bees has assessed – for the time ever - the conservation status of all 1,965 bee species occurring throughout Europe, identifying those species that are threatened with extinction in Europe, so that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. The assessment has been published as part of The IUCN European Red List of Bees and the Status and Trends of European Pollinators (STEP) project, both funded by the European Commission.

This launch event aims to inform MEPs, European Commission officials, Member State representatives, NGOs and other stakeholders of the latest scientific findings on the status of bees in Europe. Speakers will also address the threats facing bees in Europe, their critical role as pollinators of crops and wild flowers, and the benefits of healthy bee communities for both society and agriculture. Moreover, bee-friendly farming practices and the instruments in the Common Agriculture Policy, as well as recommendations for additional measures to safeguard Europe’s bees will be discussed.
