Event description

Description

The Lancet Commission: Stem cells and regenerative medicine is the work of academics and specialists from many disciplines across UCL and partners. It was led by Professor Giulio Cossu, a pioneer of skeletal myogenesis research and the first cell therapy trial with stem cells for muscular dystrophy; and co-authored by clinicians, scientists, lawyers, ethicists, anthropologists, experts on patient and public engagement, and health economists.

It was commissioned by The Lancet in recognition that a number of substantial challenges must be addressed if stem cell and regenerative medicine is to deliver sustainable, clinically significant, and equitable benefits; and that an inter-disciplinary approach was needed to address ethical and governance issues that pose a challenge to scientists in engaging with the public, the press, and decision-making bodies in different national health systems.

The launch event will be introduced by Professor David Lomas, UCL Vice-Provost, Health; and chaired by Dr Richard Horton, Editor-in-Chief, The Lancet.

Speakers:

Giulio Cossu, Chair in Regenerative Medicine, University of Manchester (Commission lead author)
& Co-authors
Tracey Brown, Director, Sense about Science
Jonathan Montgomery, Professor of Health Care Law, UCL

With
