Welcome to Lavenham Historical Talks - 7 - THIS IS A CHANGE OF TOPIC/SPEAKER
Thomas Wolsey, Ipswich’s greatest son, was England’s leading Statesman,
Churchman and Patron of the Arts in the service of King Henry Vlll.
Thanks to Wolsey being Henry’s Lord Chancellor and friend, his Master played a
greater role in European politics than any in more than a century.
The church was also in desperate need of reform, which Wolsey initiated, being
responsible for the new Renaissance culture in England.
You cannot understand Wolsey without Henry, but you cannot understand Henry
without Wolsey
