Description

In cooperation with Mannheimer Swartling and AmCham Sweden, we are delighted to invite you to

Law for business: Civil or common?
14 November 2017

The purpose of this seminar is to highlight differences and similarities between civil law and common law, by comparing the history, culture, concepts and participants in the two systems.

The legal world is divided into two camps: the “common law” and the “civil law”. About one third of humanity lives in countries where the legal system has its roots in English common law, with the rest (including Sweden) being more or less “civilian”. Business people and their lawyers from the civil law world are therefore regularly exposed to contracts, legal concepts and lawyers from the common law systems (in particular from England and the US). Sometimes concepts and contractual provisions which originate from common law even find their way into Swedish agreements, without anybody considering whether they work in a Swedish context. All of this can make legal documents (never the most easy reading to begin with) seem yet more impenetrable.
