A set of London trade schools came together to form LCF. At those trade schools in the 20th century, students wore uniforms that were coded to connect them to their particular subject or practice.
In this LCF Archives talk, you’ll see objects from the History of LCF Collection and hear about the uniforms worn by, and experiences of, past students.
This workshop is a part of our LCF Archives Display Programme. Story of a Smock: Women and Art Education in the Early 20th Century, is a collaborative display between the Centre for Fashion Curation (CfFC) and LCF Archives.
The project is centered on an artist’s smock of unknown provenance, using genealogical and archival research to trace its wearer and uncover the garment’s wider cultural significance. Through this modest object, research explores how clothing became a symbol of women artists’ struggle for education, professional identity, and creative freedom in the early 20th century.
In this talk, you will also hear about the artist smock we have on display, and the stories of the young women in arts education it tells.
Spaces for this event are very limited, so booking is essential. If you can no longer make it, please cancel your ticket order so that another student or staff member can attend.
