Event description
Discover new ideas in planting design from some of the UK's young award-winning designers

About this event

For the Autumn of 2021 our new season of info bursts will speak to 4 young Garden Designers who are making a mark through their planting designs.

Join us online over 4 evenings to hear our designers talk about their work and especially how they approach their planting designs. We’ll explore their ideas for new planting and find out more about particular projects and why they have been important to their planting design development.

You will learn -

  • How they approach their planting design.
  • The challenges and solutions they have used on individual projects.
  • New planting design ideas for landscapes and gardens on different scales.
  • How they have developed their businesses in the early stages of their careers.

There will be time at the end to ask your questions in conversation with Andrew Fisher Tomlin, Course Leader for our Planting Design Diploma.

  • Tuesday 28th September - Tom Simpson

Having qualified as a Landscape and Garden Designer at LCGD in 2016, Tom Simpson went on to work for some of the country’s leading garden designers before setting up his own practice. Working on a range of projects across the country, Tom has designed London town gardens to 40 acre country estates.

Tom is the winner of three Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medals and in 2021, with his sponsor Cancer Research UK and his team, Tom won all four of the top awards at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, including a Gold Medal, Best in Show, Best Construction (with Rosebank Landscaping) and People’s Choice Award.

In 2019 Tom designed a second show garden for Cancer Research UK, this time winning Gold, Best Construction and People’s Choice award. Tom’s debut RHS show garden was the Gold Medal winning South West Water Garden, which was commended by the judges for its originality, ambition and flair.

  • Tuesday 12th October - Ula Maria

Ula Maria is an award-winning garden designer and landscape architect. She attended the School of Fine Arts in Lithuania before moving to England permanently in 2008. She studied a BA and MA in Landscape Architecture at BCU, where she was awarded the Landscape Institute’s John Knight award for both her undergraduate and postgraduate major projects.

Since graduating, Ula has worked for a number of Landscape practices, including that of Tom Stuart-Smith, prior to entering and winning the RHS Young Designer of the Year competition where she received a gold medal for her garden in 2017. Since then she has established her own practice.

Ula seeks to create meaningful designs by a sensitive approach to an existing space. Her particular interest is in creating emotive garden spaces that evoke innate connections to nature through memories, senses, and experiences.

Ula has recently completed Design Series for Gardens Illustrated and is an author of ‘Green – Simple Ideas for Small Outdoor Spaces’.

  • Tuesday 26th October - Harry Holding

Coming from a background in horticulture and with a successful garden business Harry was awarded a scholarship to study at LCGD, graduating with the top student prize. His designs are plant driven with a focus on creating stable communities and immersive, enchanting spaces. Inspired by natural landscapes and observations of plants in their native habitats, Harry seeks to distil the essence of these environments into garden form, bringing nature back into the urban landscape.

Harry is a rising star in the landscape industry. He has been selected for Pro Landscaper’s 30 under 30 award, his work has featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs and two of his projects have been nominated for the SGD 2021 awards.

  • November 9th November - Lucy Willcox

Lucy studied photography, graphic design and worked in film production for ten years before retraining in garden design. This eclectic appreciation of the creative arts mixed with her love of planting has helped shape her approach to designing spaces. Since 2007 Lucy Willcox has produced a range of award-winning projects from compact, contemporary plots to timeless larger gardens and stunning roof terraces.

One of her first designs, her Highgate Garden, was a finalist in the Society of Garden Designers 2013 awards where she was also shortlisted in the Future Designer category, and more recently her 2020 Strand Roof Terrace Garden won the acclaimed Principal award at BALI.

The wish list of Lucy’s clients is generally vast. She skilfully produces unique schemes that include all these requests while also making her gardens beautifully designed places to relax in and retreat to.
