Event description

Description

On the 12th of May, Turquoise Mountain and Pippa Small will host a talk and demonstration by Samira Kitman, a calligrapher and miniaturist from Kabul, Afghanistan. She will be talking about her experiences as a young female artist in Afghanistan and now in the UK, as well as giving a demonstration of her craft.

Samira Kitman

At the age of 24, Samira won Afghanistan's Best Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Born in Kabul, she and her family fled to Pakistan before returning to her homeland in 2002. In 2017 she was granted asylum in the UK after a kidnap attempt and threats she believed came from the Taliban. She visited the US for a meeting with the then Secretary of State, John Kerry, and was featured in We Are Afghan Women, a book by the former first lady Laura Bush. Her calligraphy has been praised by Prince Charles and displayed in London’s V&A Museum and the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
