According to the CIPD’s most recent research on L&D, benchmarking top-performing L&D teams “roles are becoming increasingly multi-faceted … a key shift is the move away from learning delivery to performance consultancy”.
So are we prepared for this shift?
The research suggests that as a function we need to address our own skills gaps to grow capability
• to Improve business and commercial understanding
• to anticipate changes in the wider environment, use and interpret evidence and data, and offer this insight to the business or organisation
• to facilitate social learning and technological capability
• and to enable effective diagnosis of needs and the development or curation of the right solutions
Sue Toft can offer considerable insight into these challenges.
She is global Head of L&D at the British Council where she has just started putting in place a consultancy skills course for HR and L&D and other functional people in business partner roles.
The British Council is the UK’s international cultural relations body which has been around since 1934 and exists to build a friendly knowledge and understanding between people in the UK and other countries. It has staff in more than 100 countries, which offers lots of opportunities and challenges for learning!
Sue swapped an early career in banking and bookselling for HR and L&D when she decided
that people were the common factor which made work interesting. She has moved from IT to publishing, advertising, scientific, consultancy and lastly public sector organisations. Always curious about learning, particularly what makes it effective both at work and outside, she gradually built a specialism in development. But not wanting to lose touch with the business side in organisations, she has always alternated HR jobs with L&D. On the consultancy front, she has done both internal and external consultancy and enjoyed the different challenges of both. So please join us to hear Sue’s take on the issues facing L&D and share your experiences too,
