Event description

Description

Gilding with gold leaf is a technique in danger according to the Heritage Crafts Association's Red List of Endangered crafts. In a bid to save it from peril, we'll be hosting a special half day contemporary gilding workshop with master gilder Rian Kanduth aimed at designers and makers interested in applying it to wood and metal for this year's London Design Festival.

You’ll create two sample boards using loose leaf 23.5 ct triple thick gold, one applying gilding to wood and the other to metal – exploring the different possible effects. Following the session, you’ll be able to:
- Recognise the differences of texture when gilding on a substrate with mordant only/ mordant and primer, and the relevant time frames for application.

- Understand the types of mordant available and how they behave, application of and time frame needed.

- Know the recipe for gelatine size water and application.

- Know how to correctly handle loose gold leaf - cutting laying and application.

- Have a basic knowledge of gilding tools and equipment.
