Want to give rowing a try and have fun over half-term?
Our half-term Learn to Row Camp is a great opportunity for young people of different rowing abilities, from beginners to intermediate to learn the basics or refine their already developed skills.
This is a week-long course to either learn the basics of rowing to see if rowing is for you or refine the skills you already have. The course will lead you through:
- the rowing stroke
- how to row in a crew
- how to get a boat on and off the water
- how to use a rowing machine
- technical changes in a boat to improve speed
There will be five water sessions, part of it being gym based to warm up/cool down and consolidate your knowledge of the rowing stroke.
This course is for:
- children 13–16 years old
- all levels of fitness
- rowers of all levels
All participants must water confident and able to swim 25 m– we do not anticipate you needing this skill as a life vest is worn during water session however we need to know you can stay safe in the event of a capsize.
All sessions will be taught by experienced rowers and coaches. We will be teaching you sculling, meaning using two oars. Please let us know if you have any special requirements.
We have had a lot of interest in these camps and only a finite number of spaces, so please book as soon as possible.
Payment and Registration
After booking your ticket through Eventbrite, please check your booking confirmation as this will contain a link to register child. Please ensure this is completed ASAP to secure your booking.
Cancellations & Rescheduling
It is possible a water session may be cancelled for the following reasons:
- Weather: If lightning or excessively high wind speeds, freezing or really hot temperatures are forecast making it dangerous to be on the water, we will be indoors.
- Staffing: We always ensure we have a good ratio of coaches to athletes, if any any point we are unable to maintain a sufficient ratio, we will have a land session instead.
- Illness: We understand that becoming ill is unavoidable however unless we're able to fill your child's space before the start of the course we will not be able to issue a refund.
Frequently asked questions
We suggest gym wear that is not baggy. For water sessions, please ensure no jumpers or tracksuit bottoms are worn instead wear multiple fitted layers to stay warm. In the rare event of a capsize, these will become water logged which can be dangerous. Sunscreen must be worn in warmer sessions.
No, we aim to maximize time on the water, but the session also includes warm-ups, cool-downs, and time for boat setup.
You may get slightly splashed, but not soaked by the end of a session. We recommend bringing spare clothes just in case of capsizing.
Absolutely. We would hate for cost to be a limiting factor for your child getting on the water. Please email jamila.sinclair@learc.org.uk with information about your circumstances and supporting documents so we can apply for subsidy on your behalf. This offer is limited per course.
