About this Event

Leader Learning: Mastering Difficult Conversations

Led by: Stephanie Harper, Head of Projects, Navigator Employment Law Ltd

The third sector is changing fast. As leaders we know how important it is to keep pace with the challenges and opportunities presented.

This breakfast series of Leader Learning events focus on specific developmental and learning themes and comprise short, sharp seminars led by subject matter experts followed by peer discussion and input.

We all encounter 'difficult' characters from time to time. Modern workplaces can be high-pressured, sometimes fraught environments, which don’t always bring out the best in people. Being on the receiving end of unreasonable behaviour – especially from a senior stakeholder – often leaves us feeling as if our only option is to say nothing (or run away!). But what’s the result of this “do nothing” approach? We might have avoided a confrontation, but our stress levels will still have gone through the roof, leaving us in a whirl of negative emotion, complaining to colleagues and unable to focus on our work.

The good news is that there is an alternative. There are techniques we can learn which will equip us with the skills and confidence to deal successfully with difficult people, whatever their position in the organisation. In this event, we will examine the root causes of other people’s ‘difficult’ behaviour, and how to respond confidently and effectively, to achieve successful outcomes.

Discussion will centre around:

  • Developing a positive mind-set towards managing difficult situations
  • Identifying signs of conflict early
  • Understanding and identifying the causes of conflict
  • Handling conflict
  • Identifying situations within our control
  • Holding conversations

Audience will gain:

  • Insight into recent research, case studies and best approach
  • Sharing of good practice from attendees and external sources
  • An introduction to practical tools for structuring conversations
  • Access to a specialist from an ACOSVO Strategic Partner

This event is open to all Third Sector leaders and senior staff - Members and Non-Members of ACOSVO - so please circulate to your local networks!
