Leaders in Their Field: Is Farming in Revolution?

Join us at All Saints' Church, Langport for what promises to be speical evening in the heart of our rural Somerset community.

As a town shaped by farming and the rhythms of the land, Langport is the perfect setting to explore what it means to grow food and steward nature in a time of climate crisis, shifting policy, and rising public expectation. British farming stands at a crossroads — or perhaps a quiet revolution, who is leading the change and what does being a farmer mean today?

This panel brings together three West Country farmers — each deeply rooted in the land but looking to the future. Together, they’ll reflect on the pressures they face, the evolving identity of the farmer, and the possibilities opening up in a world hungry for change. Hosted by Kate Hughes, chair of Sustainable Food Somerset and an Exmoor-based regenerative farmer.

Speakers:

  • Sophie Aplin – Organic dairy farmer from Dorset/Somerset border, championing regenerative grazing.
  • Fred Price – Agroecological farmer at Gothelney Farm near Bridgwater, transforming traditional arable into a regenerative, mixed system rooted in soil health and biodiversity.
  • Harry Lang – Farmer and conservationist at Home Farm, Curry Rivel, balancing food production with wildlife, land management, and running a rural business.

Harvest Supper (optional)

After the panel stay on for a shared simple Harvest Supper in the aisles — a chance to enjoy good food, chat, and explore the themes further with the speakers and each other.

The supper will be made from donated garden and farm produce, with contributions from the community. Surplus fruit, veg and produce can be dropped at All Saints’ by 12pm, Tuesday 14th.

On the night, donations of longer-life goods are also welcome for the Langport Cares Food Bank.

The meal itself will be pay-what-you-feel, with all proceeds going towards the care of All Saints’ for its use by the community and adding much needed facilities.
