Short term mission teams can be wonderful, rich and transforming experiences however they can also be paternalistic, have unintended consequences and waste money. Church Mission Society’s ‘Leader’s Training Day’ equips leaders of teams to avoid these pitfalls. Join us to learn about how you can plan and lead a cross cultural visit and enable your team to work together and with their host.
We will be covering the following topics during the day:
Leadership in a cross cultural context: There are lots of theories as to what makes a good leader, we will be looking at some of these with a cross cultural lens. Thinking through what ‘leading’ looks like in different contexts and how we may need to adapt our style to respond to the culture, host and our team’s different needs.
Aims and partnership: Developing a positive working relationship with your host is key. This session looks at how you form aims that are mutually beneficial for you and your host, as well as how you manage and prepare your team expectations and avoid paternalism.
Group dynamics and spiritual/relational care: Caring for our teams physical and spiritual needs is vitally important. We will look at how teams are formed, practical ideas on pastorally caring for them and the potentially difficult situations you may face when leading a team who will be adjusting to a new country and culture.
Preparing your team: We will give you lots of practical ideas and accompanying resources on how to prepare your team, helping them to understand culture and worldview, mission, contextualisation and team building.
Practicalities: There are many practical considerations when planning a team from risk assessments, insurance, UK legislation and advising your team on what they need to take. We will give you advice on how you can comprehensively approach these areas.
Church Mission society has over 200 years of cross cultural experience. We are excited about sharing this knowledge with you to equip you and your team.
