Event description

Description

This is an opportunity to see the film 'Resilience - The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope', which has been arousing massive interest across Scotland. It deals with the seminal study of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), published in 1998, revealing the most important public health findings of a generation. How do we respond practically to the insights it offers? That’s the question we will address with this event.

The film makes clear the hidden struggles that many children face – challenges that adults often simply do not see. If Scotland is to have any chance of ‘raising attainment’ or ‘being best place to grow up’, then we need to take better account of those struggles. We need to respond differently to children in our communities and especially in our schools. We need to grapple with the biological need children have for relationships that feel safe and reassuring. We need the courage to lead this shift in our thinking, our practice and our policy. We need to shift NOW.

How will this evening help us on that journey? Research scientist DR SUZANNE ZEEDYK will share insights from the work she has been pursuing directly with schools seeking to embed trauma awareness in their practice. DAVIID CAMERON, now more commonly known as The Real David Cameron, will draw on his wide policy experience in education and children’s services to reflect on the barriers that keep us from putting care at the centre of educational practice. Your hosts will ensure plenty of animated discussion follows the film.

If Scotland is going to make a difference for, and with, all children – especially those children who most need that difference to be made – then we need to know more than the problems. We need to know what the solutions might be. That is what this evening will bring.

Anyone working with or caring for children and young people is welcome to join us.
