This online course is designed for practitioners in school leadership roles who are seeking evidence-based guidance and resources for implementing a whole-school strategy for English as an Additional Language (EAL) in primary and secondary schools. By the end of the course, participants create their own action plan for EAL for their school.  


The course explores:

  • How changing demographics, current policies, and staff training needs impact EAL provision; 
  • Factors that influence academic attainment for learners using EAL; 
  • A research-informed model of inclusive pedagogy as it relates to your own context; 
  • Practical tools to support a whole-school strategy, including approaches to CPD and devising a whole-school EAL policy.

Course structure:


Module One:

Pre-webinar online tasks: completed at your own pace over a one-week period.

You will:

  • Learn about factors that influence academic attainment for learners using EAL, including multilingualism and English language proficiency; 
  • Consider policies impacting provision for learners who use EAL. 
  • Optionally, learn about The Bell Foundation’s EAL Self-Assessment Tool for schools. 

Time commitment: approximately 60 minutes.


Module Two:

Live interactive webinar with the course tutors. You will only need to attend one of the two options below: 

  • Option 1: 17 June 2026, 16:00-17:00 
  • Option 2: 18 June 2026, 16:00-17:00 

You will: 

  • Explore Inclusive pedagogies for EAL learners in multilingual classrooms and the importance of educators’ inclusive attitudes, as well as social, academic, and linguistic inclusion. 

Time commitment: 60 minutes. 

Module Three:

Final project to implement learning from the course, completed at your own pace over a one to two-week period, followed by tutor feedback. You will apply what you have learned in Modules 1 and 2 by completing an action plan for your setting, considering areas such as funding, assessment, the curriculum and school ethos.  

Time commitment: approximately 60 minutes.


Course tutors:

All tutors are experienced teacher educators with substantial experience of teaching and assessing learners who use EAL in relevant contexts. Tutors are trained e-moderators and offer friendly, practical specialist support to all participants throughout the course.

Independent UK schools will be charged the standard rate with the income generated enabling The Bell Foundation to further its charitable goals.
