About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Join the RCN Foundation for our annual lecture as we explore one of the most urgent and complex challenges facing the health and care workforce: how do we lead with compassion in environments that often feel anything but?

Renowned thought leader Professor Michael West will deliver a powerful keynote on compassionate leadership- what it is, why it matters, and how it can transform workplace cultures. His address will be followed by a panel discussion featuring key voices from nursing, midwifery, and health policy.

Despite a growing body of evidence supporting compassionate leadership (West et al., 2021), many nurses and midwives continue to experience hierarchical, unsupportive workplaces that undermine their mental health and wellbeing. In a time of tightening budgets, high vacancy rates, and cultural pressures, is compassionate leadership even realistic - or is it simply idealistic?

Together, we’ll explore whether creating caring and psychologically safe environments is truly possible - and what steps can be taken to make it a reality.

What to expect:

  • Keynote address by Professor Michael West
  • Panel discussion with healthcare leaders
  • Networking and refreshments
  • Thought-provoking insights to take back to your own workplace

The RCN Foundation is an independent charity whose purpose is to support and strengthen nursing to improve the health and wellbeing of the public. It is here for every current and former nurse, midwife and health care assistant, as well as students and nursing associates. It supports individual members of the nursing team by providing grants to those who are facing hardship, or who want to enhance their skills and develop their practice; it invests in the profession by funding nursing-led projects; and it champions nursing by supporting projects that raise the profile of the profession and highlight the contribution that nursing and midwifery makes to improving the nation’s health.
