Description

Join us this autumn for a Leaf Art workshop with environmental artist Richard Shilling.

https://www.facebook.com/richardshillingslandart/

Using only natural materials and leaves we have gathered we will learn how to create fabulous ephemeral natural art sculptures.

Although Richard works with a large variety of natural materials his speciality and obsession is to work with leaves and when autumn delivers its spectacular palette of colours the opportunity to create uniquely vibrant and colourful sculptures arrives.

Richard will show you some of his techniques when working with leaves which you can then put into action to create your very own spectacular leaf sculptures.

The workshop takes place in a secret corner of rural Lancashire in the semi ancient woodland of Roeburndale next to the enigmatic River Roeburn.

This workshop is suitable for absolutely anyone. Nature art is a very accessible art form, no artistic experience or self-perceived talent is required. The techniques are simple, easy to learn and straightforward to execute. You only need the urge to come and join us to experience and appreciate the joy of Mother Nature so evident in wonderful Roeburndale.

The workshop will take place at Backsbottom Farm, Roeburndale West, Lancashire or behalf of the Middlewood Charitable Trust which exists to advance research and provide education for public benefit in techniques of agriculture, forestry, wildlife and countryside management, building, energy conservation and human lifestyle which are in tune with the natural cycle and do not upset the long term ecological balance.

30% of workshop fee goes to the Middlewood Charitable Trust to promote sustainable living and ecological education programmes.

FAQs

By booking a place on this workshop you agree to these terms and conditions.

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Email RichardShillingLandArtist@gmail.com

What do I need to be aware of?

The workshop will take place at a working organic farm, we kindly ask that all guests respect the surroundings.

Access to the workshop area is via a steep farm track down to the river which can be slippery in places. The track is approx 0.4 mile. You will need to ascend it back to your car at the end of the day. Workshops will normally take place within 1 mile of the meeting point

Suitable footwear is advised and wellies are useful should you want to wade in the river.

What do I need to bring?

Waterproofs, warm clothing, sturdy footwear, packed lunch, something to drink. Something to sit on (sit mat, small camp chair) would be useful.

You may also want to bring gloves, sometimes we use mud so rubber gloves or similar are handy. Gardening gloves are useful to handle rough materials such as bracken stalks.

How do I get there?

If you are driving use the post code LA2 9LL for your Sat Nav.

Lancaster is a West Coast Mainline train station and is approx 11 miles from Wray. There are buses from Lancaster to Wray. The farm is approximately 1.5 miles walk from Wray via a lane and a footpath.

Is there anywhere to stay?

There is bunk accommodation at Middlewood which is in regular use. If you wish to stay please email Middlewoodtrust@phonecoop.coop to see if there is any space available.

There is a Travelodge in Lancaster. And Bed and Breakfast accommodation in Wray.

Where do I park my car?

There is parking space for several cars at the farm. This is accessed via an unpaved farm track for 1/3 mile. If you do not wish to drive your car down the track you can park at the top just off the road and walk down.

Facilities/toilets

The study centre is usually available for refreshments however there are often other events taking place at the Middlewood Trust which may mean it is not available so please be self sufficient when it comes to food and drink.

There is an outdoor eco-toilet next to the study centre with running water, toilet paper and hand-soap. There is another eco-toilet near to the workshop area, that one does not have running water but does have hand-soap. Please do not bring anti-bacterial soaps – the water drainage system flows into a reed bed.

Are children allowed?

Accompanied children are allowed. Parents or guardians are responsible for their welfare at all times. Be aware the workshops are designed for adults and the day is not really suitable for very young children.

What can't I bring to the event?

Due to livestock present on the farm no dogs are allowed.

What is the refund policy?

Full payment required to hold your space on the workshop.

If cancelled more than 7 days prior 50% of fee will be refunded.
