Event description
An open call and a workshop, exploring ‘interdependent networks’ of London-based collectives and artist-run spaces, since 1988.

About this Event

PACTO invites you to ‘Lean’, a workshop exploring interdependence as a means of survival, nurture, tactic, friendship, independence and confidence; utilising the density of collectives and artist-run spaces that exist in London.

The workshop will take place at Common House, Bethnal Green, on Saturday 19th October, at 16:30, as part of Art Licks Weekend 2019.

As a starting point to the workshop, PACTO has asked other London based collectives to submit their ‘networks of interdependence’. Their submissions will then be arranged in individual maps displayed at Common House during the workshop, where they will be used to experiment on map making, visualising the submissions into one map to see how they overlap.

In PACTO we constantly interrogate the potential of building our creative practices around a context of friendship, as well as what is it that we can learn from intergenerationality. We are interested in how collectives can provide a bridge between public and private, illuminating process, sharing knowledge, exposing networks and forcing the “art world” to be accessible in all senses.

Lean is a new research program mapping out the intricate relationships that exist within the networks of art collectives. This workshop would launch a new body of research that PACTO is undertaking, looking into constructing a cohesive map of collective networks starting from 1988 (The birth of the YBA’s) till now.

The workshop will be followed by an informal meet up in a local pub (TBC) aiming to break down further what consequences these networks have and allow us to test an idea of a bi-monthly pub night also titled “Lean”. This will exist as an “artists daycare centre” for people in the creative sector to come together informally to talk about work, projects and collaborations and to find/offer support.

ABOUT ART LICKS WEEKEND 2019

For its seventh year, the Art Licks Weekend (17-20 October) takes on the theme of Interdependence: considering how participating projects work within a network of friendship, exchange and shared dialogue.

Grassroots projects have often been described as ‘independent’ but this implies being in isolation, outside of the system; and this does not fully reflect how people are now working today. Instead, these projects and practices depend on community and rely on exchange and support from one another.

The Art Licks Weekend presents projects that thrive through collaboration, and share a cooperative mentality: programmes that develop through alternative economies of reciprocity. This is a community that acknowledges the importance of support, care, and friendship as structures for working.

This year’s festival asks, what is most important when working together? What is it to care and what investment does that require? What structures need developing for sustainable outcomes?
