Aims

  • To consider different ways of seeing children – powerful, active and adventurous in outdoor environments.
  • To reflect upon how our outdoor spaces provide for these confident risk-takers and adventurers.
  • To consider aspects of leadership outdoors in order to optimise the quality of learning and teaching all year round.
  • To enhance practitioner confidence in challenging children indoors and out in providing adventurous play.

Facilitators

Lisa Bedlow, B.Ed NPQH Executive Head New Bridge and Caversham Nursery Schools.

Lisa started her career as a Nanny aged 17 and then studied Education and Drama at Froebel College, Roehampton 1986-1990. She continues her passion for Froebel's outdoor learning. Lisa has taught across age ranges but has specialised in Early Years in a variety of schools. Lisa was a lecturer at Chiltern College training Nursery Nurses. Lisa has been head of New Bridge Nursery for almost 13 years then became executive head of federated Caversham and New Bridge Nurseries. Lisa has supported both teams in gaining Outstanding OfSTED gradings. Lisa is also advisor to Angels Paradise Academy Schools in Pune, India.

Kathryn Solly, B.Ed., M.A Early Years trainer, consultant and author

Kathryn Solly has taught across all the phases of education including two years in Papua New Guinea. She realised that if she was to really make a difference she had to re-train to teach in the Early Years and has since achieved a special needs qualification and an M.A. in Early Education and Care.

After two nursery school posts outside London both involving environment development projects, she became the Head teacher of Chelsea Open Air Nursery School and Children’s Centre for nearly 17 years. Here Kathryn developed an inclusive high achieving learning community in cosmopolitan Chelsea building upon creative learning inside and out.

She was awarded the Unilever Fellowship in 2006 researching aspects of Early Years Leadership and Management. Her first book ‘Adventure, Risk and Challenge in the Early Years’ was published in December 2014. She is a Leading Thinker for the National Education Trust, Vice Chair of the Early Childhood Forum and an executive member of Keeping Early Years Unique. She is also a Froebel Travelling Tutor.
