Introducing the first of a series of LEAPS seminars, intended to help bridge the gap between research and practice in Widening Participation (WP):

Working with Student Ambassadors and Volunteers in WP work.

This event is delivered in partnership with SCAPP, and supports SCAPPs objectives for practitioners (training and development, evaluation and research, quality standards and networking).

About the LEAPS Seminar Series:

The Seminar Series will see LEAPS working collaboratively with academics to bring research pertinent to WP work to an audience of researchers and practitioners; for discussion, debate, analysis and reflection. Each seminar will see academics invited to present examples of their own relevant research, and will be accompanied by a podcast and short reading list, designed to inform and supplement practitioner knowledge and activity.

About this seminar:

The seminar will be led by Professor Yvette Taylor (University of Strathclyde) and Dr Clare Gartland (University of Suffolk), both of whom have published research on aspects of working with university students to deliver widening participation activity, and will be discussing the following examples of their own work in this area:

1) Clare Gartland (2015) Student ambassadors: ‘role-models’, learning practices and identities, British Journal of Sociology of Education, 36:8, 1192-1211, DOI: 10.1080/01425692.2014.886940

2) Yvette Taylor (2008) Good students, bad pupils: constructions of 'aspiration', 'disadvantage', and social class in undergraduate-led widening participation work, Educational Review, 60:2, 155-168. https://doi.org/10.1080/00131910801934029

Audience members are encouraged to read these two short set texts (links above) in advance of attending, so that each attendee is ready to contribute to discussion.
