Description

Hi my name is Eoin Ryan, and I write and illustrate a cartoon called Space Avalanche. www.spaceavalanche.com

And I'm teaching an evening class in cartooning, starting May the 4th, Star Wars Day at the Bath Artist Studios

If you can draw and you want to tell stories - but you aren't sure where to begin - then this is the ideal class for you

Because a cartoon strip is like the shortest type of story you can tell. In that it's a setup and payoff. A good joke is hard to remember because the connection between the setup and the payoff is so unusual - just like in a great story, the change that took place is very special.

In a larger story, the payoff can also be a new setup, and the story can continue to expand. You could argue that a movie is one giant setup and payoff, with a chain of smaller setups / payoffs woven in between.

So a cartoon strip is a great place to start if you want to understand stories. If you want to learn this basic principle of storytelling - or A basic principle of storytelling - using contrast and change - to make meaningful, unusual and funny connections..

But this class is not about theory, this is a practical class, and it's gonna be fun.

From the very beginning I’ll help you set up characters and scenarios, and get you making stories. Making short complete finished cartoons.

You'll see why connections, unusual connections are so fundamental to the way we think. From the very first chimp who saw a piece of sharp rock and a piece of meat on a bone that needed to be cut, and made that connection, and blew his mind, you'll see how we're wired to get a kind of a thrill from these cool and meaningful connections, it's like our brain rewards us with that Eureka feeling. And that's what makes stories and jokes and cartoons so compelling.

Through practical exercises you'll learn and use the basic principals of visual storytelling. And discover how character, emotion and movement and feeling can be expressed in an single still image.

If you're intimidated by a blank page, I'll show you how to get past that, we'll use very simple techniques for coming up with ideas. It isn't always easy to find a good idea - but there are definite processes you can use. You don't have to stare at a blank page tapping your pen. I'll show how to identify a good idea, and distill it down to its essence - We’ll look at how an idea can be expressed in its most succinct form.

With each class you are originating and creating your own short stories. You’ll have plenty of guidance and feedback from myself all the way up to your final completed cartoons.

After each class you'll get a follow up email and correspondance with myself and exercises to practise. And you’ll be amazed at what you and your brain will come up with!

There are just 6 places available on this course, it's 90 pounds for 6 classes - and it's starting on the 4th of May.

If you can draw and you want to tell stories this is the class for you. Any questions please comment or message me below.

Hope to see you there :)

Cheers
Eoin
