  • Heath
  • Whalebone
  • Becontree
  • Parsloes

Click here to check which ward you live in

Age: 5 + years

Duration: 1 hour

All participants will be given the opportunity to progress onto Level 1 Bikeability training with our project partners, Vandome Cycles, once they are riding.

Bikeability Level 1 aims to develop cycle handling in an off-road environment and prepare riders for cycling on the road.

Please read the event FAQs below before booking. Booking is essential.

Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the session. If you’re bringing a child’s bike, it would be helpful if you could remove the stabilisers before arrival.

We look forward to seeing you there!

COVID-19 update.

In order to keep this event Covid -19 safe, we have restricted tickets to this event.

General measures we are undertaking, include:

• We ask anyone feeling ill or showing Covid-19 symptoms not to attend the session and follows NHS guidance.

• Cycle instructors will clean equipment on a regular basis, including the disinfection of bikes after each session.

• Hand sanitiser and face masks will be available, if participants don't have their own.

• Cycling instructors will be required to maintain social distancing.

Will I, or my child/children, be able to ride a bike by the end of one session?

No - the aim of these sessions is to give you the skills to learn to ride a bike. It might take several sessions, and further practice at home, to fully learn to ride.

What ages is this open to?

To adults and children who would like to learn to ride a bike. Not suitable for children under five years old.

What do I need to bring?

Each child will need to bring a bike, to take part, and a helmet, if they have one.

One adult bike will be available for use on the day, on a first-come-first -serve basis. We also recommend you bring hand sanitiser, a face mask and a drink and snack.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

The session takes place at Valence Park. Click here to see the location on Google Maps

Transport links

Buses: 62, 368, 128, 150

Train: Chadwell Heath

Parking: Available in the park next to the playground.

Do I have to stay with my child throughout the session?

Yes. A responsible adult must stay with their child at all times. We encourage you to get involved with the session as much as possible too.

Can I book onto more than one session?

We don’t recommend booking more than one hour slot per day as learning to ride can be quite tiring, especially for young children. After your initial session, you are welcome to join us again the following week to keep practicing. Most families book in 3 weeks of sessions.

Cancellation policy: what if I cannot make it after I have booked onto it?

If circumstances change and you need to cancel your session please let us know ASAP - ideally by 8am on the day of the session as our instructors travel from up to an hour away to run the event.

You should be able to cancel your place through Eventbrite – however this can be difficult especially through your mobile. If you cannot make your session please email:, or ring or text Hana on 07814 359418.

How much does the event cost?

Nothing! It's free! These sessions are being led by Sustrans and supported by Vandome Cycles as part of the Greening the Fiddlers project - a community led design project in Becontree Heath, Dagenham.

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?

For general enquiries, please contact Hana Goodman:

By phone: 07814 359418 9

What about the weather?

Due to the unpredictable weather, please make sure you keep your phone handy with you on the morning of the session. If we have to cancel the session we will let you know via the number you give us. Please make sure you all wear suitable clothes for the weather. This goes for the adults too!

What if the event is cancelled?

Sometimes, these events will need to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances such or wet and windy weather or staff illness. We will always try and let you know with as much notice as possible. We will get in touch via the contact information you booked with, usually your mobile. Please ensure this is correct.
