About this event

Are you looking for a fun and exciting way to get fit? Join us for our four session beginner rowing course on Mondays at 7pm. Learn the basics of a new sport in a fun and supportive environment.

Absolutely no prior experience is required! We welcome adults of all levels of fitness, whether you have competitive ambitions or just want to try something new.

You'll learn the basics of rowing technique, safety, and teamwork, all while getting a great workout.

We use stable rowing boats designed for beginners, on a calm and sheltered piece of water, with experienced rowers and coaches, so you will feel confident and safe.

If you enjoy the course (and we're sure you will), you can continue onto a four session Intermediate Course - and then graduate to become a full member of our club!

About us

Lea Rowing Club is a community sports club based on the River Lea in Hackney, on the stretch of canal between Tottenham and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. We're a registered charity, run by volunteers.

We pride ourselves on being a positive, inclusive community where everyone has a place. We’re now one of the largest clubs in the UK, and offer every kind of rowing - from novice to medalist, competitive, recreational, juniors, schools, adaptive, learn to row... the list goes on.

British Rowing named us Club of the Year 2022 in recognition of our commitment to prioritise inclusion and broadening access to rowing, alongside performance rowing at the highest level.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be fit/sporty/competitive?

No! We make the course work for everyone. Plenty of our rowers are not active before they get into the sport. If you're unfit, we'll get you up and running. And if you're already active, we'll help you make the most of it!

Do I need special equipment?

No special equipment or kit is required - just comfortable clothing and a water bottle! We’ll send full instructions before the first session.

What if I'm not a confident swimmer?

Rowing is a watersport and there is a small chance you could end up in the river. We usually ask that participants can swim, but if you can't, please do get in touch anyway. We'll discuss how to adjust the sessions for you (for example, lending flotation gear so you can be confident if you fall in).

Is the course accessible?

Our facility has a lift and two accessible bathrooms, and we have experience working with disabilities of different kinds. Please let us know and we'll happily discuss how to adjust the sessions for your needs.

Will the session be cancelled in bad weather?

No. Rowing is an all-weather sport! Be prepared to get a bit wet. We will only usually cancel if rare extreme weather (flooding, lightning or excessively high winds) are forecast. In these cases, we'll communicate with you by email, and endeavour to reschedule the session.

What happens after the course?

You'll have the future option of continuing onto the Intermediate Course. This course is also four sessions long. After the Intermediate course, you'll have all the necessary skills to become a full member of our club - either as part of our recreational group or competitive squads.

What is the refund, cancellations and rescheduling policy?

Unfortunately we cannot accommodate rescheduling missed sessions, and we are unable to offer refunds. This is because we're a charity and we run our courses at full capacity. If we tag extra people onto sessions, it means others lose out on their rowing experience.

Do you offer discounted places?

Our rowing courses are the best value available in London - we work hard to keep the cost as low as possible! However, we want rowing to be accessible to anyone. If you would like to try the sport but the cost is prohibitive, send us an email and we might be able to help. learntorow@learc.org.uk

I have another question!

Email learntorow@learc.org.uk and we'll try to help!
