We are excited to welcome Steve to the pub's beautiful meadows, nearly ten years since he taught Grizedale Arts' staff to scythe up at Lawson Park!

Mowing grass, weeds and even brambles with a scythe is easier and faster than you think. It's also environmentally friendly, quiet and does way less damage to wildlife than a mower or strimmer. Once you've got the hang of it, scything can also be mindful and relaxing.

Steve has been teaching for over 20 years, after learning the craft in the Pyrenees (yep, the scythe is not just for flat land!) He's a founder member and Training Coordinator for the Scythe Association (Britain & Ireland) and has taught the use of the scythe for the RHS, National Trust, Highgrove Estate and BBC Countryfile.

On this one day workshop , Steve will cover:

• Features and advantages of the Austrian scythe

• How to set up the scythe to your size & adjust the blade

• Ergonomic mowing style for more efficient cutting and less stress on the body

• Sharpening in the field

• Peening (hammering the blade to shape the edge as part of the sharpening process)

• Care & maintenance of the scythe

The group will be 8 or less, so there will be plenty of one-to-one help and advice available. Practice scythes wil be privided, but if you do have one of your own, or want to bring one, please do.
