Learn to Scythe Workshop

Learn how to scythe in this hands-on workshop designed to equip you with the techniques and knowledge needed for effective meadow and grassland maintenance.

Mowing your meadow once a year is essential for its long-term health, as removing the dead plant growth helps prevent excess nutrients from returning to the soil.

Whether you're managing a wildflower meadow, or want to help those who do, this practical session focuses on low-impact, sustainable methods that promote biodiversity and reduce reliance on noisy, fuel-hungry machinery.

You’ll be guided by Steve Tomlin, one of the UK’s best scything instructors, known for his clear, practical teaching style and expertise. This will be a learning-by-doing workshop to send you away ready to continue on your own.

What to expect:

• How to set up the scythe to your size & adjust the blade
• Learn the most ergonomic mowing style for more efficient cutting
• Sharpening in the field
• Peening demonstration (hammering the blade to shape the edge)
• Care & maintenance of the scythe
• Meadow management tips
• FREE wildflowers to take home

These workshops are normally priced at around £70 per person, but thanks to generous funding from the D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, they are currently FREE to attend. But spaces are limited—don’t forget to book your free spot today!
