If you have always wanted to learn how to sew but can't commit to a course over several weeks, then this is the class for you. Or a perfect gift for anyone who has just got a new sewing machine as a gift & needs to learn the basics!

In this class you will learn how to thread & sew with a sewing machine & make a stylish & practical fully lined tote bag with pocket.

I will guide you through the process of creating an attractive & useful bag with precise & simple instructions helping the novice sewer feel at ease, producing a professional looking bag that you can proudly say "Thanks I made it" or give as a gift - (if you can bear to part with it!)

What You Will Learn

  • How to thread & sew with a sewing machine
  • How to sew in a straight line, reverse stitch & why
  • Explanation of stitch & needle selections
  • Understanding fabrics, grainlines, the importance of direction of fabric & seam allowances
  • Cutting out fabric
  • How to make a lined pocket
  • How to make, sew & turn a lining
  • Boxed corners
  • Topstitching
  • Attaching & securing handles

What To Bring

  • 50cm main fabric
  • 20cm contrast fabric
  • 25cm for the patch pocket
  • 80cm lining
  • Matching thread
  • 1.6m matching webbing for handles (or extra fabric to make them)

Fabric choices - cotton canvas is ideal for this 1st project, or a lightweight denim, cord or a lightweight furnishing fabric. Quilting cotton would also work but nothing too lightweight or drapey. You may need around a metre of iron on interfacing if using the quilting cotton.

Your fabric should be 140-150cm wide, otherwise you will need more. (Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any advise or you would prefer me to provide the fabric for an additional cost - samstitchmakecreate@gmail.com)
