Event description

Description

Living with a learning disability presents a wide range of challenges throughout a person's lifetime. One issue faced by many is the increased risk of developing dementia. One in ten people with learning disabilities over the age of fifty have dementia. One in fifty people with Down’s Syndrome will develop dementia in their 30s, and by the age of 40, almost all people with Down’s Syndrome will develop changes in the brain linked with Alzheimer's. Despite the increasing need for support and resources when dealing with learning disabilities and dementia, there is a visible gap in the understanding of it.

This lack of knowledge was made clear when ENABLE Scotland's member Peter Robertson started to show signs of dementia while in assisted living. Peter, who was usually enthusiastic and active, became withdrawn. He lost interest in the things he used to love, such as watching soaps on TV and listening to Scottish music. Peter was increasingly unsettled, wandering from room to room at night and trying to get out of his home, alone, at any time of the day.

It was clear that Peter needed additional support. However, his family found a lack of understanding and knowledge on how to deal with Peter's Down’s Syndrome in many hospitals and nursing homes. Peter's family struggled to find appropriate care for Peter in the local area for several months. Eventually, a suitable home was found in Lossiemouth, where staff trained were specially to deal with both learning disabilities and dementia. Unfortunately, despite this, Peter passed away six months later at the age of 57.

Peter’s story highlights the dangerous lack of knowledge and understanding of learning disability and dementia. ENABLE Scotland is teaming up with Alzheimer's Scotland, Down Syndrome Scotland and Playlist for Life to tackle this issue together. With the support of the Life Changes Trust, three Learning Disability and Dementia workshops are set to take place in Elgin, free of charge. The main goal of the sessions is to provide help and offer vital resources around learning disability and dementia.
