This Learning Disability Awareness course provides a clear and practical understanding of what learning disabilities are, why they occur, and how they impact people’s lives. It explores conditions such as Down’s syndrome and Autism, highlighting their possible links with learning disabilities and the diverse ways these can affect communication, emotions, and day-to-day living.
Through case studies and interactive activities, participants will learn how to develop personalised support plans that promote independence, confidence, and wellbeing. The course also covers how to connect individuals and families with advocacy and support groups, ensuring their voices are heard and valued.
A strong emphasis is placed on effective communication – learning to provide information clearly, listen actively, and adapt methods so everyone can understand. Participants will also gain practical skills in recognising triggers, using de-escalation strategies, and applying positive support approaches to encourage good choices and better outcomes.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Recognise the causes and effects of learning disabilities.
- Understand the impact on body, emotions, and communication.
- Create personalised, empowering support plans.
- Apply de-escalation and positive support strategies.
- Balance risk with independence, helping people make their own choices.
- Build self-esteem and support fulfilling, inclusive lives.
This course is ideal for care professionals, educators, and anyone supporting people with learning disabilities who want to develop a deeper understanding, practical strategies, and a values-led approach to inclusive care.
