Delivered by Jane Reynolds Chairman, NHS England (London Region) Continuing Healthcare Independent Review Panel.

Aim of the day:

For Health and Adult Social Care senior professionals to have an enhanced shared understanding of the NHS Continuing Healthcare process for people with learning disabilities , and the criteria for eligibility for the funding, to ensure that individuals who should receive the funding are awarded it, without delay, and that disputes are kept to the minimum.


Learning outcomes: All participants will

  • Recognise the correct quality and supporting evidence that is required in assessments

  • Have a clear understanding of the roles of assessors (the multi-disciplinary team) and the Panel which ratifies recommendations

  • Achieve shared practice in interpreting the domains in the Decision Support Tool (with emphasis on Behaviour, Cognition and Psychological and Emotional Needs)

  • Be better able to apply the four key indicators of eligibility for NHS Continuing Healthcare to identify whether individuals have a primary health need

  • Be clear in understanding the limits of the Local Authority’s lawful power to pay for individuals’ care.
