Description

Learning for Hope

An Active Hope gathering for educators, trainers and leaders

In troubled times hope needs to be enacted. ‘The Work that Reconnects’ pioneered by Joanna Macy offers a powerful approach for individually and collectively opening to our pain and hope for the world as we face social, political and environmental crises. This gathering for practice is an invitation for learning practitioners of all kinds to come together to explore how Active Hope can enrich our lives as well as the lives of those we work with, thus helping to grow a community of learning for hope. What better way to do this than converging on a beautiful Shropshire field as summer draws down into the roots, to cook and eat together, to sleep and wake under canvas and to collectively practise hope.

The gathering will take place at Crabapple Community - an intentional community of people working towards a more sustainable and co-operative way of life. This gathering will very much embody this ethos of community, with collective responsibility for ‘village life’ including food, fire and dishes.

Who is this gathering for? The idea is to offer a chance for people that identify as an educator, trainer or leader to come together and practise. We’d like to leave this broad and welcomingly open.

The shape of the gathering:

Day 1 (Thursday): Arrive, set up camp, share food and meet each other.

Day 2 (Friday): Immersive practice of The Work That Reconnects.

Day 3 (Saturday): Exploring how to bring Active Hope into our lives and work. Evening fireside ceilidh.

Day 4 (Sunday): Share food, break camp and depart.

The gathering will be led by Jo Blackman, an Active Hope trainer, in collaboration with Jane, Richard and Tom, who originally came together through a group of Learning for Sustainability practitioners called ‘Lighting fires you can’t put out’. They are keen to keep tending the flames with hope, and with you alongside!

Jo Blackman is a tutor with the WEA and a freelance trainer, focusing on eco-psychology and global justice and drawing on approaches such as ‘The Work that Reconnects’, Nonviolent Communication and mindfulness. She has for many years campaigned on the arms trade, global justice and climate change, and was a member of a women’s Ploughshares group which disarmed a Hawk jet in 1996. Over the last 7 years she has lived at Crabapple, experimented with permaculture and grown a lot of vegetables!

Jane Powell is a freelance educator and writer working in the area of food and farming. She lives near Aberystwyth where she is active in local food work, and she is also leading on a Food Manifesto for Wales. Her work is informed by her training in Buddhist practice and Nonviolent Communication.

Richard Dawson has long been an organiser of collaborative international education projects, connecting partners from across the planet. From a quiet corner of Shrewsbury he continues this work while also project fundraising for an international Buddhist charity.

Tom Deacon has a lifelong passion for being outdoors, and inviting others to join him. From his home in West Yorkshire he works freelance as a learning for sustainability facilitator and in outdoor learning and sustainability for the Field Studies Council.

Cost: We are operating a flexible and transparent charging system for this event. We need to receive an average of £70 per person to cover the basic costs of camping, food and organization. In addition, we invite further contributions of up to £100 per person in order to pay the facilitators and so enable us to continue to develop this work. However, we do not want to exclude anyone on the grounds of cost, so please let us know if you need a discounted place.

Once you register through Eventbrite, you'll receive details on how to complete your booking and make a payment.

We look forward to hearing from you!
