Abstract:

Coproduction, collaboration and respectful partnership, are key to identifying, prioritising and solving problems to deliver value-based healthcare. Here it is critical that cross disciplinary academics, clinicians, and service end users work together to gain insight into problems and jointly generate and implement solutions.

At the same time, around 10% of healthcare is potentially harmful and 30% is low value, with evidence and innovation being slow to implement. Whilst innovation to drive quality, sustainable, high value care is vital, we know that effective, large scale change is very challenging in healthcare. Such a challenge occurs against the backdrop of healthcare systems internationally facing a burgeoning ageing population, rising complexity, escalating costs, major insults from the pandemic and inevitable austerity measures post pandemic.

This talk will discuss leveraging the burning platforms mandating health system change, and explore large scale interdisciplinary initiatives underway. It will provide examples of Academic Collaborative Centre Models, Learning Health System approaches and interdisciplinary efforts including those driving equity, diversity and culture change and how to tackle challenges including the complexity and diversity of healthcare systems, the heavily siloed nature of healthcare, and research, professional hierarchies, traditional top down leadership and lack of co-production and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Bio:

Professor Teede is a clinically practising physician, senior academic and cross sector leader in Australia and internationally. She is Executive Director of Monash Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre and led the establishment and was inaugural chair of the Australian Health Research Alliance bringing all AHSCs together nationally. She has established large scale, high impact networks and has partnered to create national platforms to enable system level change. These include coproduction and implementation of a national Learning Health System Framework.

She is also the Director of the Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation, Monash University and a Senior National Health and Medical Research Council Fellow. Prof Teede has leadership roles in health care, research, translation, policy, national and international professional societies and the not for profit sector. She is a member of the Academy of Health and Medical Sciences, and the International Society of Endocrinology Executive. Helena has been recognised for her leadership with an international Laureate award and an Order of Australia. She has over 550 publications and maintains a family and a career aspiring to support others to do so. As such she heads up a Women in Leadership research and capacity building program to engage and support women in career advancement and leadership.
