Becoming a Better Teacher - The Flipped Classroom

Nigel Francis

Swansea University

Abstract

Flipped learning places higher order thinking at the heart of the classroom. The flipped classroom is characterised by a student-centred model, allowing learners to carry out the lower order thinking skills at home, freeing up time in class for the higher order skills, with support and guidance from the academic, who becomes a facilitator rather than a lecturer. In this session, Dr Nigel Francis will describe his teaching journey from starting at Swansea University to the point where he introduced the flipped approach in a first year module and how this recent experience has produced some quite striking results in student performance and feedback.

Bio

Dr Nigel Francis is a Senior Lecturer in Immunology at Swansea University Medical School. His pedagogical research interests focus around the use of flipped learning, including the use of eLearning tools for laboratory classes and the role of feedback in enhancing student learning in this teaching model.
