Modern Apprenticeships – The Scottish Government achieved its target to create 26,000 new Modern Apprenticeship (MA) places in 2016-17. It was the latest step towards the ambition of having 30,000 apprentices a year by 2020. The overall objective is to create the better-skilled and motivated workforce the country needs to grow its economy.

On the eve of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, this event will give employers and parents all they need to know about the benefits to apprentices and employers.

Experts:

John McFarlane, Employer Engagement Co-ordinator responsible for the Modern Apprenticeship programme, Fife Council.

John Mcfarlane recently became responsible for managing Fife Council’s Apprenticeship programme.

John brings 30 years’ skills development experience in the public and private sectors to the role, including as co-founder of Rainbow Nurseries Fife with his partner Audrey.

A former Justice of the Peace, John has a record of developing young people through various employability programmes and government initiatives. In 2003 he became the first Chair of the Fife Board of The Prince’s Trust.

Heather Brown, Co-ordinator for Foundation Apprenticeships, Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Fife, Fife Council.

Heather has been responsible for the co-ordination of the Foundation Apprenticeship programme – work-based learning for S5 pupils - across all Fife high schools since April 2017.

Since 2004 Heather has worked on many projects within Fife Council, including assisting people with a history of offending and drug use back into workplace opportunities. The focus of these projects has been on employability and encouraging individuals to be empowered to take back control of their life, working towards positive destinations.

From July 2014, Heather worked on Fife Council’s Affordable Housing Programme and Construction, where she successfully linked with employers to seek opportunities in industry for apprentices.

Prior to Fife Council, Heather worked in the private sector in customer service, recruitment and as a senior manager. As a volunteer, Heather has been involved for more than 10 years with Fife’s Children Panel and a community-based drug and alcohol project.
