Event description

Nursing Leaders are critical in shaping organisational culture and improving quality of care to patients. This free leadership training in association with the World Health Organisation and Nursing Now’s ‘Nightingale Challenge’ will focus on developing the behaviours, strategies and qualities necessary to be an effective modern Nurse leader. To attend this course, you do not have to currently be within a leadership or management position.

By undertaking this programme, you can expect to have your behaviours and mind set challenged and your perspectives broadened. You will be better equipped to lead transformational change within your workplace and to support your teams to do likewise. This exciting, unique programme is FREE to all Wakefield CCG Nurses and Nursing Associates.

This is an exclusive offer for Wakefield to recognise the potential of the nursing workforce.

Thank you for stepping up to be our nursing leaders of the future!

By taking part in the programme you will:

  • Develop a deeper and clearer sense of who you are and what motivates you, your strengths and your development areas

  • Improve your personal impact to help you drive progress in your team and to inspire your workplace to build compassionate, inclusive, person centre cultures of care.

  • Understand more about your team ad how to work in and with it more effectively.

  • Develop new ideas about how best to work with others through the uncertainty of change – understanding different leadership approaches and the challenges that change may bring.

  • Influence positive and productive changes to your team, services and patients in areas such as: increasing morale, improving patient experience, effective service re-design, and more efficient use of resources.

  • Increase adaptability and readiness to meet the demands of leadership within the challenging, transforming environment of health care

The leadership programme is split into four bitesize chunks. It is important to attend all four days to complete this leadership journey as each day follows on from the previous session. It will contain several different learning methods such as digital, peer learning, reflection, and some fun quizzes and exercises along the way!

Day 1 - Welcome to your flight (4 February 2020)

This first day of the leadership journey will introduce you to understanding who you are and your role within leadership. We will focus on self-awareness, self-worth and how to harness your talent in leadership. We will look at what makes a leader and how this differs from management.

Day 2 – Turbulence (20 February 2020)

Day two will look at how we react when things go wrong and how we maintain our resilience. We will cover scenarios and delve deeper into what makes us react the way we do and how we can influence change.

Day 3 – Learning to Land (4 March 2020)

We have established the basics of who we are, where we sit in the wider system, what makes us tick and how we manage setbacks. We will now focus on how we are actually going to take steps to apply this knowledge within a quality improvement project.

Day 4 – Living the Dream (17 March 2020)

We are now well on our way to being established nurse leaders. This session will consolidate your learning and look forwards to your new life as a nurse leader, as well as celebrating your success!

Refreshments & catering

A complimentary lunch will be provided on each day; including vegetarian and gluten-free options, if required. Please confirm when you reserve your space or email:

Tea, coffee and water will be available throughout the event.

First time to Kings Medical Practice?

Our training venue is easily accessible by car with cheap parking immediately opposite. If you are attending for a training session longer than 1 hour, here's a hint; don't use the ASDA car park. For the ecological amongst you, Normanton railway station is only a 7-minute walk away and there are regular buses that run to and from Wakefield and the surrounding district. For the more adventurous, there is a secure covered area for cyclists.
