Description

Sleep-dependent learning and daytime function in childhood & adolescence

Parents: How important do you think sleep is for your child's learning experience?

The sleeping brain is far from idle. Sleep plays a vital role in a range of mental and physical health domains that are vital for good learning, healthy development, physical growth.

In this talk, Dr Frances Le Cornu Knight will discuss sleep-dependent learning; the observation that memory for newly acquired information is strengthened following a night’s sleep. She will illustrate the negative effects of poor sleep on attentional and behavioural functioning, which in turn may have a disruptive influence on learning. Indeed, there are parallels between the consequences of poor sleep in childhood, and the profile of difficulties associated with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Finally, Dr Knight will make a case for promoting healthy sleeping habits in our children, specifically those who suffer problematic sleep, as an effective and inexpensive way of providing an good foundation for education on an individual level.

Dr. Frances Le Cornu Knight

At UCL, Frances’ primary research interest focuses on sleep problems in ADHD, and their consequences for learning, attention and daytime behaviour. She is also interested in modern lifestyle factors associated with poor sleep in childhood and adolescents more generally. Recently, Frances and colleagues have begun exploring how we might use mobile phone technology to improve sleep in these populations.

Frances is also incredibly engaged with her teaching. She is programme leader for the Graduate Certificate in Psychology, and leads on modules across a range of academic levels.
