Event description

Description

Delievered by: Rachel Purcell and Stuart Cochrane

The session will focus on the development eLearning units to meet ‘gaps’ in the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) market for Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs). The Speech Therapy Education and eLearning (STEEL) project commenced August 2015 with the aim of developing CPD materials for qualified SLTs and other allied health professionals. Funding from Health Education North West (now Health Education England North) was used to secure staffing, software and hardware for the project, which ends October 2018. We report on the progress of this three-year project and the development of a suite of Level 7, 15 credit distance learning units to meet CPD needs of SLTs. Each of the Level 7 units aims to meet CPD requirements for SLTs, focusing on a specialist clinical area. Some units have the potential to appeal to other healthcare professionals and all incorporate the principles of face to face teaching into their design. We will report on the design decisions taken and the tools used (iSpring, Articulate, Softchalk), and demonstrate examples. We will also report some preliminary results from a small evaluation project of the units.

  • Delegates will leave the session with a good understanding of:

- The aims and methods of developing distance learning level 7 CPD units for speech and language therapists and related healthcare professionals.

- The principles of face to face learning are applied and incorporated into the design of eLearning units.

- iSpring, Articulate Storyline and Softchalk, for the development of eLearning materials.
