Event description

Description

Today, the area from Covent Garden westwards to Soho, is mostly shops and bars and retail outlets selling fashionable clothes, coffee, craft beer and gadgets.

But look up and around you and see that in the early 20th century, when Covent Garden was still a bustling fruit and veg market and Soho was still basically a village, the streets in this zone were lined with tradesmen and services of all kinds.

Come and hear about these businesses by following a trail of historic faded signage known today as "ghostsigns" - hand-painted ads applied directly onto the walls above the streets.

You'll see old signs advertising various types services and products from hospitality and hardware to horses and horsepower. Learn about printers, artists, woodworkers, billard halls and, perhaps, the only kind of thing that continues in this area today; cafés, restaurants and hotels.

The 2-hour walk starts near Covent Garden station and ends in central Soho.

Details of the exact meeting point will be on your booking confirmation and ticket which will be sent via email

We so enjoyed your walking tour yesterday - really really fascinating. With the right mix of interesting facts and fabulous visual proof. Really brilliant! I’ve been telling everyone I’ve met today about how brilliant it was - and you even managed to keep my two grumpy teenagers interested and keen to spot the next sign! We will definitely be back for more!

As you can appreciate, transfers/reassignments do not apply to those who just do not show up.

Jane ParkerMy guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends.
The walking tours I offer are all on subjects I am genuinely interested in – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am specifically interested in the changing face of our streets over time and how those changes have affected local communities and the social history of an area.
