The Commonwealth Association of Architects is pleased to launch a pilot programme of lectures for built environment professionals, the aim of which is to facilitate knowledge exchange between member organisations and member firms, to help promote mutual understanding and greater awareness of issues related to climate change and rapid urbanisation together with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

While targeted at qualified built environment professionals, it is hoped that this series will be of interest to policymakers, city leaders and students alike.

As the world embarks upon a Decade of Action in which to achieve the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the Commonwealth Association of Architects has recognised an opportunity to provide mutual support by means of a structured programme of knowledge exchange in the form of a pilot CPD series and, with nearly 50% of the projected increase in the world’s urban population to 2050 forecast to be in the Commonwealth, architects and built environment professionals have a critical role to play in helping to achieve a more sustainable future for all.

This webinar is the third lecture in the series and will be delivered by Alfredo Caraballo, Director at Allies and Morrison. Well-managed cities recognise the need to plan properly for growth. In many cases this will result in the development of planned city extensions. In this lecture, Alfredo sets out what a masterplan should achieve and the importance of flexibility and the process of developing a successful urban vision. As a case study, he presents a project for a new urban extension of Muscat, Oman, which aims to set new standards in terms of sustainability and design while providing a catalyst for change in the Sultanate.Upon conclusion of the lecture, Ben will be joined ‘in conversation’ by Tom Perry, Head of Cities at the Design Council.

This lecture will be followed by a further four lectures, delivered by a range of subject matter experts:

#4 Resilient Infrastructure, Ian Carradice, Arup

Explains the importance of resilient infrastructure (ie transport, energy, water, waste etc) in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals.

#5 Climate Responsive Design, Peter Clegg, Isabel Sandeman & Rachel Sayers, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios

Part One is focused on a ‘Manifesto for delivering Climate Responsive Design’, providing an overview of climate responsive design including a reminder of the importance of passive design principles and low carbon construction. Part Two, entitled ‘Collaborating for Sustainable Development' provides a case study of how the principles of Climate responsive design can be used in a project in Bangladesh to create an inspiring and comfortable educational environment for the Aga Khan Academies unit.

#6 Heritage-led Regeneration, Geoff Rich, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios

#7 Sustainable Outcomes Guide, Gary Clark, HOK

Provides a practical explanation of the outcomes that need to be delivered if we are to achieve development which is sustainable. Includes meaningful, measurable targets with associated metrics. Upon conclusion of the lecture, Gary will be joined by Martina Otto, Head of the Cities Unit at the UN Environment Programme and Head of Secretariat at the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction.
