This lecture is about how our letterforms changed over the millenia but also why they changed and how the technology empolyed by scribes contributed to the evolution of the alphabet we use today.
In this hour long lecture-demonstration we will look at how our alphabet evolved over 2500 years touching on its beginnings in egypt and the levant and moving on to it’s formalising by the phonecians. We swiftly jump to how the greeks transformed the, then, alphabet and what happened when the romans exerceted their might upon it. The influence of the irish monks and their uncial script to mediaeval hands, renaissance and copperplate scripts will all be demonstrated.
The talk will also look at what happens in the early 20th century with the advent of ruling pens and the use of traditional tools used in a non-traditional manner. It is here we encounter our contemporary period, the one we currently live in, and consider the path for the future.
