Confessions of a Golfing Bibliophile

About this event

Philip Truett talks about his obsession to acquire every golf book published pre 1920 and what's happened to him in the intervening 49 years.

Philip has had a near lifetime in Golf History and Collecting Golf Memorabilia, in pursuit of his own and Walton Heath Golf Club’s collections. He was the club’s Archivist for 38 years, created its famous collection and the Braid Exhibition. He passionately believes that a Club’s Heritage and History is one of its most valuable assets. With four friends, he started the British Golf Collectors Society in 1987 and has served as its Captain and President. He has been a member of the Golf Collectors Society (USA, 1970), now renamed The Golf Heritage Society, since 1974 and has served on its Board. He continues to serve on the USGA’s Museum and Library Committee. He is proud of being instrumental in starting the Royal & Ancient Golf Club’s Heritage Committee in 2006. Understandably, he only plays with James Braid hickory shafted golf clubs, being keen to continue the time-honoured tradition of supporting the local pro. His golf library is said to be the finest in Walton on the Hill and, as such, has warranted inclusion in the publication, Great Golf Collections of the World (Saron Press, USA, 2013).

This lecture will take place in the Museum restaurant and doors will open from 6.30pm for attendees to purchase refreshments.
