"The History of Horwich Works: How the Railway Built a Town"

Description

This month we welcome back historian Derek Cartwright.

Derek Cartwright is third generation railway immigrant into the town of Horwich. Trained as ‘Millwright’ he was made redundant from Horwich Works in 1983. Since then he has spent 32 years in the Ambulance Service rising from Paramedic to Chief Executive Office. He now volunteers with Horwich Heritage holding post of ‘Secretary’. He and wife Joanne have four grown up children and five grandchildren. He was awarded a Queens Ambulance Medal in the NY Honours list 2015, A Master Degree in Business Administration and, still lives in Horwich.

In this talk Derek looks at the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway arriving in Horwich and how it changed the course of the once rural town and dominated it for almost 100 years. In that time generations engineers, trained locally not only produced fine locomotives but carried their skills elsewhere changing the face of the railway industry.
