About this event

More apples or pears than you know what to do with? Tired of seeing fruit falling on the road? Just can’t handle another crumble?

Each year, thousands of fruit trees across the city go unpicked, while many people struggle to access fresh fruit. We want that to stop. Leeds Urban Harvest aims to pick, preserve and distribute as much of the surplus fruit as we can, and today is your chance to help us do that.

Today we will be making juice, mainly apple, from the nearly half a tonne of surplus fruit that has already been donated to us this year. As much of this juice as possible we will be bottling and pasteurising to make it last as long as possible.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided, so please let us know that you are coming and any dietary requirements.

The session is a volunteer session to process as much fruit as we can through the day, using machinary and keeping things to meet food production standards. This isn't a family friendly event primarily for adults. If anyone under 18 attends, they must be supervised by their designated adult at all times, and will need to participate in a way that does not slow down the juicing process. Please don't be surprised or upset if we ask them to move away from a work area so others can use it as needed. For more information about some of the family friendly days we run or support with our rental kit, please get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child come?

This is a session run by volunteers to turn as much fruit as possible into a food product. This means we need to work quickly. Any child under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times, and may be asked to stand back from equipment if slowing the process down.

Can I juice my own apples and take it away?

You can donate your own apples on the day, but it will not be possible to juice your apples seperately. All volunteers will get a proportion of the juice share at the end of the season. If you want to juice your own apples, you can hire our kit or we can point you to a public event.

Can I bring my apples to donate on the day?

You can, but please don't bring any apples after 1pm. And please don't bring large amounts (more than a couple of supermarket crates). We appreciate the donation, but if lots of apples arrive late in the day, we are unable to process them all.

How long do is the day?

You don't have to stay for the whole day, but to have lunch provided and claim the juice share, we ask that you complete at least 5 hours. Snacks will be available for all volunteers. If you can't do the whole day, please consider arriving later as we need enough help at the end.
